Over the last week, intense rainfall and a disastrous Storm Ana has occurred claiming the lives of 34 innocent people and leaving another 65,000 homeless, 7,000 of these homes currently under water. The heavy rains have triggered severe flooding and landslides in the capital Antananarivo which went on to travel across the Indian Ocean hitting Mozambique and taking the lives of a further 2 people.

According to the Global Climate Risk Index, Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi are highly vulnerable to climate change and are predicted to face cyclones, droughts and increased flooding in the near future.

Reflection Box

  1. These three regions of Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world. Each individual is believed to produce 0.13 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. An average Irish person would produce 7.62 tonnes per year meaning that an Irish person produces more than 58 tonnes than a Madagascan. Yet, Madagascar is more likely to receive worsened effects than Ireland.

Here we see extreme injustice, 34 people lost their lives this week due to the activities of other people halfway across the world.
